A store opening and closing checklist, by zone.

Walk the store at the start and the end of the day. Mark each line Pass or Fail and write what you did about a fail. Print the sheet or save it as a PDF.

How to use it

Three habits that make it worth filling out.

  1. Step 1

Walk the same route every day

Start at the entrance and finish at the back. A set route makes it hard to skip a zone.

  2. Step 2

Fix the small things as you go

A spill, a blocked aisle, a dead bulb. If you can fix it in a minute, fix it and tick the line. If not, write it down.

  3. Step 3

    Hand off the fails

Anything marked Fail goes on the handover note for the next manager, with who will fix it.

Do this on a phone instead of paper.

Turn this list into a recurring task for each site and shift. Each step is checked off on a phone, and a missed one shows up for the manager.

Common questions

What goes on a store opening checklist?
The alarm, the entrance and parking area, the sales floor, the registers, the back room, the restrooms and the cleaning supplies. The aim is a safe floor, a ready register and clear exits before the first customer comes in.
What goes on a store closing checklist?
Clearing the floor, cleaning spills, taking out trash, counting and securing cash, locking doors and windows, setting the lights and the alarm, and a last walk to make sure everyone is out.
Can I change the list for my store?
Yes. Use it as a starting point. Add the zones and tasks your store has, and take out the ones it doesn't. Edit it in the checklist builder.
