Toolbox talk, Procedures, about 5 minutes
Housekeeping
Why this one
A messy site trips people, hides hazards, blocks exits and feeds fires. It also tells the crew that corners are okay to cut. Clean-as-you-go takes minutes and saves time on the back end.
Say this
- 1.Clean as you go. Don't leave it for the end of the shift or for the next crew.
- 2.Keep walkways, stairs, exits and emergency equipment clear at all times.
- 3.Store materials where they can't roll, slide or tip. Stack them stable and at a safe height.
- 4.Put scrap, trash and oily rags in the right container. Oily rags can start fires.
- 5.Coil cords and hoses. Route them out of walking paths.
- 6.Pick up nails, wire and sharp scrap. Pull or bend over nails in boards.
- 7.Return tools and equipment to where they belong. Report broken ones.
Ask the crew
- – What's the messiest spot on this job, and what would it take to fix it?
- – Who owns cleanup in a shared area?
- – What's something we left behind last time that caused a problem?
Watch for today
- Blocked exits, fire extinguishers, eyewash stations and electrical panels.
- Scrap, cords and tools in walking paths.
- Unstable stacks and loose materials near edges or traffic.
Close with: Leave it cleaner than you found it.
