Slips, trips and falls / Resbalones, tropiezos y caídas
Slips, trips and falls
Why this one
A fall on the same level is one of the most common ways a worker gets hurt. It happens on clean floors and muddy pads alike. Most of it comes down to what's underfoot and what's in the way.
Say this
- 1.Look where you're walking. Phones, loads and tools stay out of your hands on stairs and uneven ground.
- 2.Wet, oily or muddy footing is a hazard. Clean it up or mark it, and tell the next crew.
- 3.Cords, hoses and cable run across a walkway get routed overhead, along a wall, or covered.
- 4.Wear boots with good tread, and replace them when the soles are worn smooth.
- 5.Keep walkways clear. Pipe, lumber and scrap don't get left where people have to step over them.
- 6.Light matters. If you can't see the path, get lights on before you move.
- 7.Use the handrail on stairs and steps. Don't jump down from trucks and docks.
Ask the crew
- • Where on this job would you most expect somebody to slip or trip today?
- • What's the worst footing you've worked on, and what did you do about it?
- • Who owns cleaning up a spill when you didn't make it?
Watch for today
- Wet, icy, muddy or oily spots on the path to the work area.
- Cords, hoses and materials lying across a walkway.
- Missing handrails, loose steps, uneven boards or open holes without covers.
Close with: Eyes up, path clear, footing checked.
