Toolbox talk, Culture, about 8 minutes
New worker safety
Why this one
New workers don't yet know the site's habits, the hazards or who to ask. They're also less likely to speak up. A good first-day talk and a buddy cut the guesswork.
Say this
- 1.Welcome to the crew. The first rule here is you can ask anything, any time, and nobody will think less of you.
- 2.Here's your lead, and here's your buddy for the first days. Check with them before starting anything new.
- 3.Here's where the exits, the muster point, the first aid kit and the extinguishers are. Let's walk to them now.
- 4.Only do the tasks you've been trained and cleared for. If someone asks you to do something you haven't been shown, say so.
- 5.You have stop work authority. If it looks wrong, stop and tell someone.
- 6.Wear the PPE we require, and tell us right away if it doesn't fit or is damaged.
- 7.Report every injury, close call and unsafe condition to your lead, the same day.
Ask the crew
- – What would have helped you on your first day on a job like this?
- – Experienced hands: what's one thing about this site that isn't written down anywhere?
- – New folks: what's still unclear after what we've covered?
Watch for today
- A new worker doing a task they haven't been shown or cleared for.
- New hires left alone with no buddy or lead nearby.
- A new worker who looks unsure and isn't asking.
Close with: Ask first. Nobody here is judged for a question.
