A ground power unit inspection checklist for the ramp.

Check the cable, the connector and the unit before it plugs into an aircraft. A damaged cable is a hazard to the aircraft and to you. Print the sheet or save it as a PDF.

How to use it

Three habits that make it worth filling out.

  1. Step 1

    Look at the cable first

The cable takes the most abuse. Run your eyes along the whole length, then check both ends.

  2. Step 2

    Check before the aircraft

Do it before the unit is connected, not after. Never connect a damaged cable or connector.

  3. Step 3

    Report what you find

Tag it, tell the lead and note what failed. A power fault usually means a qualified person looks at it.

Do this on a phone instead of paper.

Run this check on a phone, with a photo on any failed step, no signal needed. A failed step opens a repair and the record is kept for you.

Common questions

What is a ground power unit?
A GPU supplies electrical power to a parked aircraft so it doesn't run its own engines or auxiliary power unit. Some are engine driven, some are battery powered, and some are fixed at the gate.
How often should a GPU be inspected?
Before use, at the start of each shift or when the operator changes. The maker's manual and your airline or ground handler set the full schedule.
Can I repair a damaged cable myself?
No, not unless your procedure says you're qualified to. Tag the unit out of service and report it. Electrical repairs go to a qualified person.
