Electrical safety basics
Why this one
Electricity doesn't give you a second chance. Damaged cords, wet ground and overhead lines hurt crews who aren't electricians every year. Most of it is easy to spot if you look first.
Say this
- 1.Treat every wire and every panel as live until a qualified person proves otherwise.
- 2.Only qualified people work on electrical systems. If you're not qualified, don't open it.
- 3.Inspect cords and tools before use. Pull any with cuts, bent prongs or exposed wire, and tag them.
- 4.Use GFCI protection for temporary power and wet or outdoor work, per your site rules.
- 5.Never remove the ground pin. Never run a cord through water or over sharp edges.
- 6.Look up. Know where the overhead lines are and keep your equipment, ladders and loads away per your procedure.
- 7.Lock out and tag out before working on equipment that can be energized, per your procedure.
Ask the crew
- – Where is the nearest power source, panel or overhead line to our work today?
- – What cord or tool have you seen that should have been tagged out?
- – What do you do if you see someone in contact with a live wire?
Watch for today
- Damaged, taped or spliced extension cords, and cords running through water.
- Equipment, ladders or loads near overhead power lines.
- Open panels, missing covers and daisy-chained power strips.
Close with: Treat it as live until it's proven dead.
