How to use it

Three habits that make it worth filling out.

  1. Step 1

Walk it the same way each time

Use the same line and the same order so nothing gets skipped. Walk slowly. Look down.

  2. Step 2

Pick it up, don't kick it

Everything goes in the container. Look at what you've collected before you dump it.

  3. Step 3

Report what looks like a part

A bolt, a panel piece or a bit of cable may have come off an aircraft or a tug. Tell the lead and don't toss it.

Do this on a phone instead of paper.

Run this check on a phone, with a photo on any failed step, no signal needed. A failed step opens a repair and the record is kept for you.

Common questions

What is FOD?
Foreign object debris. It's any loose object on the ramp or taxiway that doesn't belong there and could damage an aircraft, hurt someone or foul equipment.
How often should we do a FOD walk?
Your station's procedure or your airline's sets it. Many stations walk at the start of a shift and after any spill, repair or heavy weather. Check what yours requires.
Why log what we pick up?
The same item turning up in the same spot points to a source, like a worn cart or an open bin. The log helps you find and fix it.
