Sun and UV exposure
Why this one
Sun damage adds up over years outdoors, and it shows up later as skin and eye problems. Clouds, cool days and reflection off water, metal or concrete don't make it go away. A few habits cut the exposure.
Say this
- 1.Put on sunscreen before you head out and reapply through the day, per the label.
- 2.Cover up where PPE and heat allow. Long sleeves and pants of light fabric help.
- 3.Wear a hard hat with a brim or neck shade, and wear a brimmed hat when a hard hat isn't required.
- 4.Wear sunglasses or tinted safety glasses that block UV and meet your eye protection requirements.
- 5.Take breaks in the shade when you can. Set up shade where there isn't any.
- 6.Don't forget your ears, neck, the backs of your hands and your lips.
- 7.Check your skin. Tell your doctor about moles or spots that change, bleed or don't heal.
Ask the crew
- – Where do you get the most sun on this job, and what are you wearing for it?
- – What makes sunscreen hard to use on a worksite, and what helps?
- – Where could we set up shade today?
Watch for today
- Workers with a sunburn, red skin, or exposed necks and ears.
- Long stretches in direct sun with no shade or break.
- Reflective surfaces like water, metal and concrete adding extra glare.
Close with: Cover up, block it, find the shade.
