Eye protection
Why this one
An eye injury takes a second and can change how someone sees for good. Dust, chips, sparks, splashes and swinging tools are everywhere on a crew. The right protection only works when it's on.
Say this
- 1.Wear eye protection whenever the task or the site calls for it. Put it on before you start.
- 2.Match it to the hazard. Impact, dust, splash, grinding and welding need different gear.
- 3.Use side protection. Hazards don't only come from the front.
- 4.Use a face shield over glasses or goggles for grinding, chipping and splash work, per your procedure.
- 5.Keep lenses clean and replace scratched ones. If you can't see clearly, you'll take them off.
- 6.Know where the eyewash is and how to get there blind. Keep the path clear.
- 7.For a splash, flush right away and get medical help. Bring the safety data sheet.
Ask the crew
- – What eye hazard on this job do we take for granted?
- – What makes people take their glasses off, and what could fix that?
- – Where's the nearest eyewash, and could you find it with your eyes closed?
Watch for today
- Grinding, cutting, chipping or blowing off with compressed air without proper eye protection.
- Scratched, fogged or cracked lenses.
- Eyewash stations that are blocked, empty or out of date.
Close with: Right eyewear, on before you start.
