Toolbox talk, Hazards, about 6 minutes
Struck-by hazards
Why this one
Being hit by something is among the most common ways workers get badly hurt. It's often the thing you forgot was above you, behind you or on the move. The line of fire is the place to stay out of.
Say this
- 1.Know what's moving. Equipment, loads, vehicles and people all make the line of fire.
- 2.Stay out from under suspended loads and out of the swing radius of equipment.
- 3.Make eye contact with the operator before you step into their work zone.
- 4.Barricade the area below overhead work. Wear your hard hat where it's required.
- 5.Tether tools and secure materials at height. Don't toss tools up or down.
- 6.Wear high-visibility clothing around equipment and traffic.
- 7.Stack and store materials so they can't roll, slide or tip. Stop work if it feels unsafe.
Ask the crew
- – Where on this job would you be in the line of fire without realizing?
- – How do we let an operator know we're in their area?
- – What gets dropped, thrown or flung around here, and how do we stop it?
Watch for today
- Anyone under a load, a lift or overhead work.
- Unsecured tools, materials or loose items at height.
- Pedestrians working close to moving equipment with no spotter.
Close with: Stay out of the line of fire.
