Toolbox talk, Hazards, about 7 minutes
Caught-in or -between
Why this one
When a worker gets caught or crushed, it's usually serious and it happens fast. Trench walls, rotating shafts, moving equipment and stacked material all do it. Distance, guards and lockout are what separate a crew from the hazard.
Say this
- 1.Know where you could get caught: rotating parts, belts, rollers, trench walls and moving equipment.
- 2.Keep guards in place. Don't remove or bypass one to save time.
- 3.Lock out and tag out before you clear a jam or reach into a machine, per your procedure.
- 4.Don't enter a trench or excavation unless it has been inspected and protected, per your procedure and the current rule.
- 5.Keep clear of equipment's swing area, between equipment and a wall, and between a trailer and a dock.
- 6.Loose clothing, long hair, jewelry and gloves can pull you in. Secure them.
- 7.Never assume the operator sees you. Make contact and agree on signals.
Ask the crew
- – Where on this job could someone get caught or pinned?
- – What's the shortcut around a guard or a lockout that you've seen someone take?
- – How do we make sure the operator knows we're between equipment and a wall?
Watch for today
- Missing, loose or propped-open machine guards.
- Open trenches or excavations without protection, or without a safe way out.
- People standing between equipment and a fixed object.
Close with: If it can move, stay out of its way.
