Respiratory protection
Why this one
A respirator only protects when it's the right type, fits your face and is used the way you were trained. The wrong one gives a false sense of safety. Lungs don't heal like skin does.
Say this
- 1.The task decides the respirator. The safety data sheet and your hazard assessment say what you need.
- 2.You need to be trained, medically cleared and fit tested before you use one, per your program.
- 3.Beards and stubble break the seal on tight-fitting masks. Talk to your lead if that's you.
- 4.Do a seal check every time you put it on, the way you were trained.
- 5.Use the right filter or cartridge for the hazard, and change it on schedule or when it's hard to breathe or you smell something.
- 6.Clean, dry and store it in a clean bag or case, away from dust, sun and chemicals.
- 7.If you feel dizzy, get a taste or smell, or have trouble breathing, leave the area and tell someone.
Ask the crew
- – Which tasks on this job need a respirator, and how do you know?
- – What makes it hard to use one the right way?
- – Where do we keep our respirators clean, and who checks the filters?
Watch for today
- Dust masks or cloth masks used where a respirator is needed.
- Respirators stored loose in a truck bed or toolbox.
- Workers with facial hair or a hard hat strap breaking the seal.
Close with: Right mask, right fit, every time.
