Toolbox talk, Hazards, about 7 minutes
Driving safety
Why this one
For many crews the road is the most dangerous part of the day. Work trucks are loaded, tools shift and everyone is tired or in a hurry at the end of a shift.
Say this
- 1.Seat belt on before the truck moves, every trip, every seat.
- 2.Phone down. Don't text, scroll or dial while driving. Pull over to take a call.
- 3.Match your speed to the road, the weather and the load. The posted limit is a maximum, not a target.
- 4.Leave room in front of you. Heavy loads and trailers take longer to stop.
- 5.Don't drive tired. If your eyes are heavy after a long shift, tell your lead and find another ride or rest.
- 6.Never drive after alcohol, drugs or medication that makes you drowsy.
- 7.Secure the load and the tools in the cab. Anything loose becomes a projectile in a hard stop.
Ask the crew
- – What's the roughest part of the drive to this site or home from it?
- – When are you most tempted to use your phone behind the wheel, and what could you do instead?
- – What do we do if someone's too tired to drive home safely?
Watch for today
- Drivers on the phone or looking down while moving.
- Unsecured tools and materials in the bed or the cab.
- A coworker who's yawning, red-eyed or nodding off before the drive home.
Close with: Belt on, phone down, eyes up, and nobody drives tired.
