Lifting and back safety
Why this one
Strains and sprains from lifting add up slowly and then hit all at once. A bad back on one crew member slows the whole job. Most of it can be handled with a cart, a helper or a better plan.
Say this
- 1.Size up the load first. Check the weight, the grip, and where it's going before you lift.
- 2.If it's too heavy or awkward, get a cart, a dolly, a hoist or a second person.
- 3.Clear the path. Look for steps, cords, wet spots and doors you'll have to get through.
- 4.Get close to the load. Feet apart, firm footing, and keep it near your body.
- 5.Bend at the knees and hips, keep your back in its natural curve, and let your legs do the work.
- 6.Don't twist while you carry. Move your feet and turn your whole body.
- 7.Set the load down the same way you picked it up. Tell the crew if it's too much and ask for help.
Ask the crew
- – What's the heaviest or most awkward thing we move on this job, and how can we do it better?
- – What tool or cart would make your day easier?
- – When is it okay to say 'I need help with this one'?
Watch for today
- Heavy or bulky items being carried by one person when a cart is nearby.
- Lifts from the floor, over a rail or above the shoulder with no help.
- Repeated lifting or awkward positions that wear on one person all shift.
Close with: Plan the lift, ask for help, keep it close.
