LMS: Learning management system

An LMS is software that assigns training, delivers it, tracks who finished it and keeps the records, usually with courses, quizzes and reports.

Also calledlearning management system, training software, online training platform, e-learning platform

What it means

A learning management system holds courses, puts them in front of the right people, records completions and keeps the results. Most can also track certifications and send reminders when they expire.

Many LMS tools were built for office staff. They assume each person has a company email, a laptop and a quiet half hour. That fits poorly for crews. A laborer may have no company email, a shared phone or none. Training happens at a truck tailgate, on a rig, or in a place with no signal. Long courses on a small screen get skipped or clicked through.

The fit matters more than the feature list. For a field crew, ask how people sign in without an email, whether training works with no signal, whether a lead can sign off hands-on skills, and whether records are tied to the person or to the job.

Why it matters

Training records are what you show when someone asks who was trained, on what, and when. If the system is hard for the crew to use, the records are thin and the training doesn't stick. The tool has to work where the crew works.

What it looks like on a site

  • A new hire gets a set of courses by role, and the lead can see what's done and what's late.
  • Short lessons run on a phone in the truck or at the shop, not only at a desk.
  • Hands-on skills are signed off by a lead, since a quiz can't prove someone can run a lift.
  • Certifications with expiry dates show up in a list before they lapse.
  • Someone with no company email can still get in with a code, a badge number or a phone number.

Common questions

What is an LMS used for?
It delivers training, tracks who completed it and keeps the records. Many also handle certifications, due dates and reports for leads and auditors.
Why do crews struggle with a typical LMS?
Many assume a company email, a computer and a steady connection. Field crews often have none of those. Look for easy sign-in, offline use and hands-on sign-off.
